How We Added 2,500 Global Subscribers to Awesome Golf Without Breaking the Bank

This was a lovely golf tech marketing project. When the team at Awesome Golf asked me to step in as their Fractional CMO, they had a brilliant piece of simulator and entertainment tracking software. It was visual, it was incredibly fun, and it had a lot of potential.
The catch? Like many bootstrapped tech businesses, they weren’t exactly sitting on a Silicon Valley-sized pile of cash. And they wanted more downloads and subscribers.
My mandate was to take a modest budget and somehow scale app downloads. To convert them into long-term Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR). And shift users toward lifetime memberships across the UK, USA, EMEA, and Southeast Asia.
The Strategy: Ditching the Textbook for Real Commercial Discipline
In a lean, privately funded environment, you cannot afford to throw money at vague “brand awareness” campaigns and hope for the best. Every single marketing pound spent has to justify its existence by directly impacting the bottom line.
Instead of chasing expensive traditional advertising, we focused on building an organic and highly targeted ecosystem:
- The Influencer Network: We identified and partnered with digital golf creators. They already had the ear of our exact target audience, allowing us to rapidly lower our customer acquisition costs (CAC).
- Data-Driven Content: We deployed a tactical mix of paid and organic social content. All designed specifically to show the software in action. If you can visually demonstrate how much more engaging a range session is with gamified tracking, the software practically sells itself.
The Results
I’m far too British to boast, but the data speaks for itself. Within a six-month period, we managed to scale the active subscriber base from 11,000 to 13,500 global users. More importantly, we proved that you can successfully execute an aggressive golf tech marketing programme for an international market penetration strategy using sharp commercial discipline and a clear understanding of what makes golfers tick. At a very cost effective CPA!
